Tornado is the largest ride in Finland and the tallest full circuit looping rollercoaster in Scandinavia. Its trains are well done, because they give you great freedom as the restraints aren't pushing you tight to the seat, and there's plenty of room to move unlike in B&M's 4-across versions. If you get bored of riding frontwards, it's always nice to ride with your shoulders sideways. :)
The station is dug underground, it's inside a hill near the parking area of Särkänniemi.
The ride begins with about 60 deg turn right to the lift hill. If you look back in the beginning of the lift hill you can see the log flume Tukkijoki above the track. The coaster was built above the log flume, so there are a few crossings of the tracks throughout the ride.
After the lift hill there's a nice, about 135 degree righthand twisting first drop with plenty of airtime at the back. Two of Tornados largest inversions follow now: the gigantic loop and a cobra roll. You'll experience some high positive G-forces and speeds of 75 km/h in a valley between the loop and the Cobra. After the cobra you'll go trough a wide lefthand turn through the loop. This part is very smooth, so it gives a sensation of flying.
The turn is followed by an intense Inline-twist trough the station - a one of a kind feature in the world. After that there's a 270 degree helix to the right called the Carousel. Now you'll just go trough another Inline-twist and the final lefthand curve. The total number of inversions is 5, with Cobra Roll being a double-inversion.
The look of the ride is very plain "beton and steel", but I guess that creates a certain feeling of massiveness to the coaster. I'd like to see the surroundings of Tornado redecorated though, they were left very plain and boring after the modifications in 2001.
The coaster cost an estimated 9.3 million €, making it the third (or perhaps even the second) most expensive rollercoaster in Scandinavia. To make room for Tornado Särkänniemi had to rebuild the whole central area of the park and move the entrance gate. The total expenses that year are believed to have been around 11 million €.They also built a big restaurant that year.
